The Death of Mainstream Media | FEAT. Baewolf

Can it be saved?

With the ratification of the Bill of Rights in 1791, freedom of the press would be guaranteed by the First Amendment. Originally a tool for criticism, investigation, and the spread of information to the populace, reportage became a rapidly growing medium with increasing popularity. In 1934, The Communications Act ensured that the "airways are public property", with the main condition of use being whether the broadcaster served "the public interest, convenience, and necessity".

Media consolidation has been a huge issue, and over the last few decades, it turns out that a total of 6 major corporations, and 15 billionaires, own most of the media within the United States. Isn't that a problem, especially when most of those organizations wear their bias "on their sleeves"? By definition, "fake news" is "untruthful-on-purpose stories... which have a purpose of misleading the reader to think one way."

Join us in episode 52 as we discuss the history of the mainstream media, the current state of decay that it's in today, and what the future may hold for journalism as it applies to American society.
